GBCC wins grant to develop master plan

Thanks to a support grant from the National Park Service, a master plan that charts the future of the 45-mile Greens Bayou watershed is being developed. The grant teams the National Park Service with the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition to develop a strategic plan for the corridor. That master plan will focus on parks, acquisition of adjacent open space, conservation of undeveloped property, landscaping, and land and water trails. The National Park Service will also help identify potential partners, contributors and funding sources.

West Reach: Clean-up event targets trees and trash along bayou 

Rain and cold weather didn’t stop 75 hardy volunteers from attending the first Greens Bayou clean-up and tree planting event March 20. Volunteers filled 50 bags with trash and planted 40 trees before a downpour pummeled the area.

South Reach: State Farm grant helps rid bayou of invasive plants

Invasive plants are choking the South Reach and threatening the landscape that

makesthis section of Greens Bayou a magnet for birders and canoe enthusiasts. But help is on the way. The Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition (GBCC) has been awarded $38,000 by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board to create a program that will help eradicate invasive plants and restore the bayou’s delicate ecosystem.

North Reach: New park will promote physical activity for senior citizens

 

Plenty of parks cater to kids, but few   accommodate the needs of active seniors.

That’s about to change in the North Reach. Texas Parks & Wildlife has approved a $97,000 grant for development of Ida Gaye Gardens, a park designed to promote moderate physical activity and prolong an independent lifestyle for senior citizens.
