Clean-up event targets trees and trash along bayou’s West Reach
Rain and cold weather didn’t stop 75 hardy volunteers from attending the first Greens Bayou clean-up and tree planting event March 20. Volunteers filled 50 bags with trash and planted 40 new trees before an afternoon downpour pummeled the area. “The volunteers were incredible,” said Regina Lindsey, executive director of the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition. “When the rain came they just kept working. They had a lot of fun and it was fun to be around them.” The day’s activities were focused on the bayou’s West Reach, which spans from U.S. Highway 290 to Veterans Memorial Drive. This portion of the bayou is narrow and channelized, and its major transportation routes are U.S. 290 and FM 1960. Plans are under way for a trail system that will give residents recreational opportunities and easy access to this stretch of bayou. Cleaning up the West Reach is a top priority, but volunteers also want to make the sparse landscape greener. “The trees really made a difference,” said Lindsey. “We are so grateful to all the volunteers who came out and supported the community.” The event was a team effort. KBR provided financial support and Harris County Flood Control District, Trees for Houston, Bayou Preservation Association and CenterPoint Energy donated expertise and equipment. Hopefully, we can get Mother Nature on board for the next bayou activity.
