Canoe and Kayak
Canoe and kayak enthusiasts, both novices and seasoned veterans, will enjoy paddling the waters of Greens Bayou year-round. The very natural section of the bayou’s South Reach is the favored destination. From Greens Bayou Park, a great spot for put in/take out, outdoor types can choose to paddle approximately four or 10 miles upstream. At the four-mile point lies an island that makes a fun (and welcome) picnic spot.
The bayou is especially enchanting during the winter months as the bare trees reach towards the water’s surface. Throughout the year, birds and waterfowl, such as kingfishers, egrets and herons, can be spotted from the serenity of a canoe or kayak.
Under normal conditions, the bayou’s current is minimal and even beginners should be comfortable with a short excursion on the water. Be advised, however, there are no boat ramps or put in/take out facilities along the bayou, making some access points rather rugged. Able-bodied participants may be needed to manage the transitions between water and shore.
Thankfully, the City of Houston and Houston Parks Board are collaborating to turn approximately five acres at the intersection of Greens Bayou Drive and Dwight Street into a canoe launch park. Additional canoe trail access points are also being considered.
Greens Bayou Canoe Classic
The access challenges have not stemmed the tide of canoers and kayakers exploring the natural beauty of Greens Bayou. Each March since 1994, the Greens Bayou Canoe Classic takes place on a nine-mile stretch from below Brock Park at 8201 John Ralston Rd. to Greens Bayou Park at 700 Westmont Drive, and includes events for a range of ages and skill levels.
