Milestones
In its brief history, the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition has accomplished much, thanks largely to the community groups and leaders who volunteer their time to address the challenges and opportunities along the bayou.
2002
The Greenspoint District creates the Greens Bayou Task Force (GBTF) to address flooding in the Greenspoint area.
2004
Concepts are developed for the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition (GBCC), an organization to address flooding along the entire 45-mile span of Greens Bayou.
2005
North Houston Association begins facilitating initial GBCC meetings to help establish the organization.
Reach committees are established, stakeholders are identified and a kick-off organizational meeting is held.
2006
Monthly meetings of the GBCC begin.
Articles of incorporation and bylaws are developed.
Board members are selected.
2007
Williams Brothers Construction becomes GBCC’s first corporate sponsor.
The GBCC logo is developed.
The first GBCC Board meeting is held in November 2007.
Harris County Flood Control District presents the Greens Bayou Mid-Reach Flood Damage Reduction Plan and an alternatives analysis for improvements.
2009
Portions of the Mid-Reach Flood Damage Reduction Plan are taking shape. In the North Reach, preliminary engineering has begun on the Glen Forest Basin, a 165-acre detention basin on Greens Bayou at I-45. Property acquisition is complete for the 293-acre Kuykendahl Detention Basin on Greens Bayou, south of Kuykendahl near Ella Boulevard.
March
Regina Lindsey is hired by Greenspoint District to serve as GBCC Executive Director.
July
NRP Group offers to donate land in the West Reach to develop a linear trail system along the bayou.
August
Texas Parks & Wildlife approves a $97,000 grant for development of Ida Gaye Gardens, a park designed to promote an independent lifestyle for senior citizens. The future park will be located in the North Reach on 3.2 acres at Langwick Drive and West Hardy Road.
In the South Reach, a partnership with Houston Parks Board is formed to develop a canoe launch park near the intersection of Greens Bayou Street and Dwight Street, north of Interstate 10.
September
The National Park Service approves a grant application to provide technical services for a master plan of parks and trails for the entire Greens Bayou corridor.
GBCC is currently working with local stakeholders to undertake a feasibility study for a regional wastewater treatment plant for the Port of Houston area in the South Reach.
