North Reach

The North Reach of Greens Bayou stretches from Veterans Memorial Drive to the Union Pacific Railroad, just east of US 59. The North Reach benefits from two high-traffic intersections: Beltway 8 at Interstate 45 and Beltway 8 at US 59. These key intersections give the North Reach easy access to Bush Intercontinental Airport and the Port of Houston.

This area is home to several established parks and trails, some of which were developed and/or are maintained by the area’s two management districts and one tax increment reinvestment zone (TIRZ), the Greenspoint District, the East Aldine District and the Greater Greenspoint TIRZ. These groups, in addition to the North Houston Association, are key partners with the GBCC in advancing the priorities of the North Reach.

Priorities

Chief among the priorities are mitigating flooding via development of detention basins that include sports and recreation facilities along the bayou.

• The GBCC was awarded $2.3 million from Texas Department of Transportation to build and extend trails from Thomas R. Wussow Park to a future skateboard park. This trail system will also connect to West Reach trails and a planned tournament-level soccer complex at Glen Forrest Basin.
• The development of soccer fields at the Lauder Basin was recently added to the East Aldine District’s master plan.
• The GBCC has secured a grant from Texas Parks & Wildlife to construct Ida Gaye Gardens, a park designed to provide physical activity for senior citizens.
• Discussions are under way with Aldine ISD to construct an outdoor classroom for high school students.
