Paddling for a Cleaner Greens Bayou!

On May 16, twenty-three paddlers launched from Thomas Bell Foster Park on a beautiful day. They had a single goal - a Trash Free Gulf, beginning with this stretch of Greens Bayou. The Greens Bayou Coalition had been soliciting volunteers over several months. People came from Houston Canoe Club, Houston Pollution Control Services, Walter P Moore, Raba Kistner, and Aldine ISD. Some had paddled the Greens Bayou Regatta with us before, or previously joined an on-the-water cleanup. This time was BIG!
The group put in over 100 total hours and collected over 235 pounds of floatable trash from the bayou. They paddled between 4.5 and 5.5 miles to get the job done, on a day just made to be on the water.
Greens Bayou Coalition thanks our volunteers for their enthusiasm, hard work, and persistence! We thank Constantin Platon and his team from Kayaking Texas, our kayak vendor for the training, leadership and helpful sponsorship. We give a grateful shout out to the Trash Free Gulf Campaign, our partner for this cleanup. They provided the door prizes, extra trash-grabbers and onion bags for the event. We are so appreciative to our program sponsors: Port Houston Community Grants, H-E-B Our Texas Our Future and Waste Management--we could not continue our programs without support such as theirs.
